The name pays homage to the history of tobacco. According to Villiger, when Christopher Columbus brought tobacco to Europe, it was called the sacred or holy plant of the Indies, also known as San’Doro. The Ecuadorian and Nicaraguan tobaccos in this blend combine perfectly, making San’Doro a standout addition to the world of premium cigars, even if it took Villiger over a century to get there.
Cigar Aficionado noted: «Villiger is a company with a long tobacco history dating back to the 19th century. However, its history in the premium sector is not as extensive, closer to 10 years.» Based in Switzerland, its premium products are distributed through Villiger Cigars North America, with the United States being its main market. Their efforts to enter the high-end sector have resulted in a complete portfolio, the most memorable being the Villiger San’Doro Colorado.
It received an outstanding 92-point rating in the December 2016 and October 2018 issues of Cigar Aficionado magazine. Additionally, it was voted among the Top 25 Cigars of 2016 by the same publication.
